David Wnendt's social commentary in his film, Look Who's Back

What kind of social commentary does the filmmaker seem to be offering about politicians, media and society?

Wnendt's satire, Look Who's Back, follows Adolf Hitler as he returns from the dead in Berlin in 2014. Wnendt shows how society takes in and is persuaded by propaganda and can be controlled by the propaganda appealing to their emotions and being vague with the facts and the actual agenda. The film shows how society is no different today as they were in Germany in the 1930s and 40s when Hitler came to power. It shows how we can all fall for the same persuasive political techniques today as in past history. The film shows how history repeats itself. The film shows how politicians often carry this false persona for the public and in many cases lie and/or exaggerate the truth in order to be likable and to gain power and national support as well as use propaganda. The film also shows how media effects society's choices and views through propaganda or uses media as a distraction from the truth. The film shows montages of people on YouTube and other sites talking about Hitler and creating nonsense content and memes that is taken as a joke and distracts the public from Hitler's real agenda. He also uses the television show he appears on to spread his message, but in a way that is easier for people to get behind. This is very relevant in America today with the Trump presidency and the rise of "fake news" used as propaganda to hide the truth in order to persuade the masses to follow Trump and his beliefs by persuading people that the media is wrong and fake and he is the only one to trust. The film shows this through Hitlers second rise to power in 2014 and the way he was able to persuade people to get behind his agenda through propaganda. This also reinforces the message of how history repeats itself because in a way it is happening right now. The same methods used to persuade people and appealing to their emotions instead of delivering the truth is the same now as it was in the past. The only that has changed is the platform it is shown on with modern day technology and social media.
